Feb 19 (Reuters) – American Airlines said on Thursday it has selected CFM International’s LEAP-1A engines to power future deliveries of its Airbus A321neo narrowbody jets.
The U.S. carrier placed an order for 260 new aircraft in March 2024, including 85 A321neo jets, with the remainder split between Boeing and Brazil’s Embraer.
CFM International, jointly owned by GE Aerospace and France’s Safran, competes with RTX unit Pratt & Whitney to supply engines for Airbus’ narrowbody aircraft.
Under the agreement, CFM will also continue to provide long-term maintenance support for the engines. American Airlines’ existing A321neo fleet is already powered by CFM LEAP engines.
Airlines often favor a single engine type across a fleet sub-segment because it simplifies operations and lowers costs.
The companies did not disclose financial terms of the deal.
