DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The fires, started by lightning on July 6th, in northern Minnesota have now covered a combined 63,594 acres.
There are 962 personnel working to control several of the largest fires that continue to burn. Containment estimates are continuing to increase thanks to current fire behavior and natural barriers such as lakes and other waterways.
The Thumb fire that has burned over 17,000 acres is now 58 percent contained and crews are continuing to shore up the northern perimeter of that fire that extends into Canada.
The Bear Trap and Dark fires are 34 percent contained and have burned nearly 38 thousand acres in the BWCA and Canada.
Eleven fires west of Echo Lake and east of Highway 53, including the Chub Fire, are now over 80 percent contained.
The Sioux Fire, north of the Echo Trail and east of the Jeanette Campground, has burned about 12 thousand acres and is 17 percent contained.
The Camp fire, about 4,400 acres in size, located north of Winton is now 23 percent contained.
The number of fires still burning in the region continue to change as some have merged and others have moved into a patrol status.
Fire behavior is expected to become more active as dry conditions continue, winds remain steady and temperatures climb through the end of the week.
